Lebanese Prime Minister Saad El-Hariri resigns

The minister expressed fears of assassination during a televised speech

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad El-Hariri announced his resignation on Saturday during a televised speech.

El-Hariri spoke about his fear of facing assassination, saying that there is a plot to target his life.

He also strongly attacked Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, explaining that Lebanon’s current situation became similar to the period that appeared before the assassination of his father Rafik El-Hariri in 2005.

The resignation of the prime minister is expected to impact the situation in the country.

The former prime minister asserted that “wherever Iran interferes or exits, damages follow it, as it has a big desire to destroy the world.”

Regarding Hezbollah, he expressed his rejection of the use of Hezbollah’s weapons towards the Lebanese and the Syrians, pointing out that its intervention in both states has caused problems in the Arab environment.

He was designated prime minister on 3 November 2016, and his father was also the country’s prime minister for two terms—first from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 until his resignation on 20 October 2004.
