Al-Sisi heads to Oman for bilateral discussions with Sultan Qaboos

Visit first of its kind for Al-Sisi since assuming office in 2014

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi heads Sunday to the Sultanate of Oman to meet the Sultan Qaboos bin Said and other top officials in Muscat to discuss bilateral relations between the two Arab countries, according to a statement from Egyptian presidency spokesperson Bassam Rady.

The visit comes as the first of its kind for Al-Sisi since he assumed office in 2014.

According to the statement, the discussions between the two leaders will address their bilateral relations and means of boosting cooperation between Cairo and Muscat. They will also discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Rady said that the visit comes with the aim of developing the historic relations between the two countries, continuing coordination, and consultations on different bilateral issues.

Oman is a neutral state which adopts a self-distancing policy regarding international and regional crises. The Gulf country did not get involved in the Gulf crisis between Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt on one side, and Qatar on the other.

Oman attended the inauguration of Al-Sisi through a high level delegation and also participated in the Egypt Economic Development Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2015. Also, an Omani delegation participated in the opening of the New Suez Canal.
