Smartphone shipments declined 2% annually to 360m units in the second quarter (Q2) of 2018. Samsung led the smartphone market volume wise with a market share of 20% in Q2 2018, even though it registered an annual decline of 11%, due to weak sales of its flagship Galaxy S9 series smartphone.
Huawei’s shipments grew 41% annually in Q2 2018. The company managed to be the fastest growing smartphone brand at 21%, amid China’s declining domestic smartphone market, compared to its 71% growth overseas.
Apple shipped 41.3m iPhones during Q2 2018, up 1% compared to the same quarter last year. iPhone X remains Apple’s top seller for the quarter.
According to a report by Counterpoint, (which provides reports on the global smartphone and tech industry with detailed analysis materials) Chinese companies dominated most of the world’s top smartphone vendors in Q2 of this year, where four Chinese companies held the positions of the world’s seven top selling smartphone companies. Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, and VIVO ranked on the list.
The report also stated that the Q2 sales reflected Samsung’s control over 20% of sales, followed by Huawei in the second spot with 15%.
Apple ranked third on the list with a market share of 11% followed by Xiaomi with 9%.
OPPO accounted for 8% of sales in Q2 2018 to rank fifth, then VIVO in sixth place with 7%, while LG came in seventh in last place with a market share of 3%, according to the report.
