Syria accuses Israel of firing Damascus airport with missiles

Israeli army did not comment on Syrian accusations

The Syrian air defence have intercepted Israeli missiles near Damascus late on Saturday, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA. The Syrian army accused Israel of firing the missiles that targeted Damascus airport.

Syrian military source told “our air defences responded to an Israeli missile attack on Damascus International Airport and shot down a number of hostile missiles.” The agency did not give information about casualties or other destructive impacts of the missiles.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that the strikes hit a weapons depot outside the airport, pointing out that the missiles, suspected to be Israeli, destroyed an arms warehouse near the Damascus International Airport.

The Israeli army did not comment on the Syrian accusations, and an Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson said, “Israel does not comment on reports by foreign media.” Meanwhile, Israel has targeted Syrian sites before and an Israeli official said earlier on September that the IDF has hit more than 200 Iranian and Hezbollah targets in Syria.

“Israel is constantly working to prevent our enemies from arming themselves with advanced weapons,” the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday in a meeting with his cabinet. “The country’s red lines are clearer than ever, and its resolve to enforce them are stronger than ever,” he added.

Moreover, the Syrian regime announced plans to launch a major military attack on Idlib, Syria’s last rebel stronghold in northwest Syria, amid international warnings of the attack that could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
