Five fishermen released after being arrested by Turkish naval forces

Kyrenia District Court fines each fishermen €500

Five Egyptian fishermen released on Friday after being arrested for approaching territorial waters in northern Cyprus, according to statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson.

The ship carrying the fishermen is expected to arrive on Saturday with the crew of fishermen to the Port of Limassol in Cyprus.

Kyrenia District Court had fined each one of fishermen with €500 and were paid by the Cypriot-Greek Company owning the ship.

On 21 September, the Turkish naval forces seized a Cypriot fishing ship carrying five Egyptian fishermen near the coast of the Turkish Cypriot region of northern Cyprus

The ministry praised the cooperation of the Cypriot side with the Egyptian embassy in Cyprus to release the fishermen. Following the arrest, the embassy in Cyprus was informed four hours later by the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which it has immediately made several contacts with the relevant Cypriot officials.
