Egypt, UK work to develop post 2020 Biodiversity Global Framework

British Minister for Environment visits Egypt

British Minister for the Environment Thérèse Coffey said that the country is keen to work with leading countries and Egypt to develop the post 2020 Biodiversity Global Framework to protect the world’s plants and animals.

Coffey spent three days in Egypt participating in the UN Biodiversity Conference, according to a Saturday statement of the embassy, adding that the British Minister met with the Egyptian Environment Minister, Yasmine Fouad, where both ministers discussed opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the UK and Egypt.

“I am delighted to participate in the UN Biodiversity Conference and to meet the Minister of the Environment Yasmine Fouad,” noted Coffey.

The minister’s visit comes in line with the British embassy’s campaign entitled ‘Better than Plastic,’ which aims to raise awareness in the local community on the harmful impacts of single-use plastic and to provide information on alternatives.

The British embassy kicked off ‘Inspire Egypt’ in September 2016 to celebrate inspiring Egyptians from all walks of life, said the statement, adding that through the campaign, the embassy has held a series of events, workshops, activities, and competitions that shed a light on successful Egyptians innovating in fields including agriculture, education, sports, and social enterprise, particularly those working on building an more inclusive and equal society.
