Egypt’s automotive sales reach EGP 34bn in 9M 2018

Many economic factors, crises have left their mark on current automotive sector

Automotive sales in Egypt reached about EGP 34bn during the first nine months of the year, according to the statistics published by the Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC).

The car sales increased by 35.9% to reach 130,000 units in the first nine months of 2018 compared to 96,200 units in the same period of 2017.

The sales of cars with engine capacity of less than 1,000 CC reached EGP 578,8m, between 1,000 and 1,300 CC reached EGP 212m, between 1,300 and 1,500 CC reached around EGP 3,2bn, between 1,500 and 1,600 CC reached around EGP 15,8bn, between 1,600 and 2,000 CC to EGP 29,4m, and less than 2,000 CC recorded EGP 17,8m.

Concerning sports cars for multi-usage (SUV) with engine capacity of less than 2,000 CC, the sales amounted to around EGP 10bn, while the sales of SUV passenger cars of over 2,000 CC recorded about EGP 3,9bn.

According to AMIC, passenger cars priced between EGP 200,000 and 300,000 marked the highest sales share of 35,3% representing 33,700 units.

The cars whose prices exceed EGP 400,000 came in the second place with sales share of 30,2% representing 28,800 units.

In the third place came cars priced between EGP 300,000 and 400,000 with a sales share estimated at 21,8%. The volume of units sold from this category reached 20,800 units.

The fourth place was acquired by the cars priced from EGP 150,000 to 200,000 whose sales share was 12,2% representing 11,600 units. The share of cars priced EGP 150,000 reached around 0,4% representing 390 units.

Sales of the private cars hiked by 38% recording 96,000 units compared to 69,500 units in the last year.

On the other hand, bus sales grew by 17% reaching 11,300 units compared to 9,700 units, while the truck sales marked an increase of 38%.

The locally assembled cars witnessed an increase in their sales by 18.3% reaching 63,000 units, and the imported car sales hiked by 58%.
