Shoukry, Lavrov discuss bilateral relations, regional updates

Egyptian minister received on Tuesday Secretary-General of IFRC

Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, discussed in a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, the latest developments in the region, especially the Syrian crisis and the Palestinian cause, in addition to bilateral relations.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Ahmad Hafez, said in a statement on Monday that the two ministers tackled possible ways to reach a political solution to break the deadlock in the Syrian crisis.

“The officials further reviewed the latest developments in the Palestinian cause,” the statement mentioned, adding that they reiterated their keenness to achieve a comprehensive peace agreement based on a two-state solution.

Shoukry and Lavrov also discussed boosting bilateral relations and increasing cooperation at all levels in the next period, Hafez said.

The strategic relationship between Egypt and Russia was revived since the “2+2” meetings in 2013, in which Egypt became the sixth country to be associated with such strategic discussions with Russia at the level of foreign and defence ministers, after the United States, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Elhadj As Sy, met with Shoukry on Tuesday during his first official visit to Egypt.

This visit came in recognition of the Egyptian Red Crescent’s role in the development of the society, and the assistance of refugees and migrants from neighbouring countries and integrating them in the Egyptian society.
