Shoukry asserts importance of political solution to achieve Syrians’ aspirations

Minister met UN Special Envoy to Syria to discuss various topics including counterterrorism

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to discuss recent updates in the war-torn country.

During the meeting held early on Sunday, both exchanged views over means to advance the political process, humanitarian challenges, and efforts of counterterrorism in the region.

According to the ministry’s statement, the efforts included “ensuring that no foreign combatants, extremists or terrorist elements sneak out of their concentrated positions to the rest of Syria and inin states across the region.”

The statement noted that the new special envoy “was keen to include Egypt at the forefront of states he is consulting with on the Syrian issue after assuming his new position recently.”

“(Pedersen) was also, keen to listen to Cairo’s vision on advancing the political process to resolve the crisis; especially in light of Egypt’s balanced position, which aims to restore the unity and stability of Syria and the security of its territories,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Shoukry asserted the importance of “working on breaking the current stalemate plaguing the political process and reaching a political solution that would achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people, based upon UNSC resolution 2254 and away from any foreign interference that aims to undermine Syria’s stability,” the statement noted.
