Abou El-Gheit, Salamé discuss political solutions for Libya’s deadlock

Violence has engulfed Libya since 2011

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abou El-Gheit met on Saturday with the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya Ghassan Salamé, in Cairo to discuss finding a solution for the Libyan crisis and finalising the constitutional demands and elections.

The Arab League spokesperson Mahmoud Afifi said in a statement that Abou El-Gheit and Salamé stressed the importance of continuing efforts aiming at building trust between the Libyan rivals, and encouraging all parties to overcome its differences and engage in a political process to hold the elections in accordance with the Al-Skhirat agreement.

During the meeting, the secretary-general asserted the league’s support for the UN’s planned roadmap for Libya and the US-sponsored political course to end the political deadlock and division in Libya, in order to hold the parliamentary elections.

He also stressed the necessity of ending the military militias which threaten the sovereignty of Libya.

Violence has engulfed Libya since 2011, when a popular uprising ended with the ousting and death of former President Muammar Gaddafi. Since the ousting of Gaddafi the country has seen rival governments and parliaments in the west and east.
