Supreme Media Council blocks 2 websites for publishing false news

Websites of Al-Akhbariya and Al-Sabah News to be blocked for three months for publishing false information about Huawei

Supreme Media Council, headed by Makram Mohamed Ahmed, issued a decree on Saturday to block two news websites: Al-Akhbariya and Al-Sabah News, for publishing false information about Huawei in Egypt.

The legal representative of the company has filed a complaint to the council, accusing the two websites of publishing false information about the company’s activities.

In its complaint, the company accused the websites of blackmailing the company and attempting to harm the company’s reputation and damage its projects in Egypt.

Meanwhile, the websites, both chaired by Marwa Abu El-Zahr, denied the accusations and reported that they only requested EGP 30,000 for advertisements of the company on the websites.

The council said that after holding five meetings to investigate the complaint, listen to testimonies, and review documents, it was found that the websites violated the code of media ethics so the council blocked the websites for three months, ordering them to delete all false news published about the company. It further ordered the websites to publish an apology to the company.
