AL discusses forming multinational force to protect Gulf waterways

The participating foreign ministers asserted the necessity of rejecting any military solutions in Syria and Libya, while the Council expressed the importance of defending Arab issues in international forums.

The 153rd Regular Session of the Council of the Arab League (AL) at the Ministerial Level discussed on Wednesday establishing a multinational force to protect Arab Gulf waterways.

The participating foreign ministers asserted the necessity of rejecting any military solutions in Syria and Libya, while the Council expressed the importance of defending Arab issues in international forums.

“We have taken appropriate decisions regarding the region’s issues, and the AL has the ability to reach solutions that are acceptable to all,” said the Council. During the meeting, the participants tackled the COVID-19 outbreak and decided to confront it collectively through appropriate measures.

Moreover, the Council stressed its rejection to the construction of new Israeli settlements in Palestine, asserting that the Palestinian cause will always be part of the Arab personality, demanding the international community to conform to a two-state solution in order to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

On the sidelines of the AL meeting, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry affirmed Egypt’s support for the security and stability of the Arab Gulf, as well as rejecting foreign intervention in Arab countries’ affairs.

Shoukry’s remarks came during his meeting with Oman’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi. Both ministers discussed boosting bilateral cooperation in different fields.

The meeting also tackled mechanisms to support a joint Arab action, as well as discussing a number of regional issues with a common interest, including the latest developments of Palestinian, Libyan, and Syrian conflicts.

Earlier, Shoukry met Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Noureddine El-Rai, reiterating Egypt’s supportive stance towards Tunisian efforts in confronting terrorism and achieving security.
