US reports first coronavirus-related death of an infant

Coronavirus cases soared in the US recording 122,246 infections, Italy death toll surpassed 10,000

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported on Saturday the death of an infant younger than one year in Chicago who tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
“There has never before been a death associated with COVID-19 in an infant. A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death,” said IDPH Director Dr Ngozi Ezike. “We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. If not to protect ourselves, but to protect those around us.”
Coronavirus cases soared over the last two days in the US, as the country reported 122,246 infections, the majority of which are in New York.
While confirmed US coronavirus-related deaths doubled in two days, hitting 2,000 on Saturday evening.
Older adults are at higher risk of severe illness, and more than 85% of deaths in Illinois are among individuals 60 years of age and older. However, people of all ages are suffering from severe illness.
Globally, COVID-19 cases surpassed 659,546, while death toll reached 30,629. The coronavirus pandemic has been spreading rapidly across the world, with Europe being the most hard-hit region. On Saturday, Italy registered extra 889 deaths in 24 hours, bringing its total to around 10,023 deaths and 92,472 cases. While Spain reported 844 new deaths, bringing its total death toll to 5,982.
