Egypt registered on Friday 358 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the total number of infections in the country to 5,895.

According to a statement by spokesman for Egyptian Health Ministry, Khaled Megahed, 14 cases have passed away from the disease, bringing the total death toll to 406. The new figures show that the pandemic contagion curve in the country has notably accelerated in recent days.

The spokesman said that 79 cases, all Egyptians, have left hospitals in the past 24 hours after being fully cured. Test results of 1,875 of the confirmed cases have turned negative, adding that 1,460 of them have been discharged from quarantine hospitals after they completely recovered.

All COVID-19 cases in Egypt receive necessary medical care in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization, Megahed said. The Egyptian government has recently started to ease restrictions and reopen services and offices that have been closed over the past six weeks, amid a “coexistence plan” to live with the pandemic through precautionary measures while resuming services and economic activities. The country is currently implementing a nine-hour nighttime curfew that will continue until the end of the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan
