Maait orders that customs clearance of some imported goods will be speeded up amid COVID-19 fight

Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait has announced a list of imported goods with priority customs clearance amid the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, as reported in the Ministry’s Tuesday statement.

The ruling provided for priority clearance for basic foodstuffs, raw materials used in food production, and medical supplies and equipment.

According to a statement, the list also included fuel, perishable goods, and production components for the industrial sector.

Maait stressed the necessity of expanding customs preclearance and increasing the number of centres designated for this purpose, so that holders of preclearance certificates could have advantage at customs sites.

The Minister also reviewed the Egyptian Customs Authority’s plan to deal with the repercussions of the coronavirus crisis. He stressed the necessity of balancing between preserving the health of citizens and the continuation of production while taking precautionary measures.

The Minister stated that activating the electronic customs declarations service comes to maintain a swift supply flow of goods amid the coronavirus crisis, and in line with the government’s directives to limit the spread of the virus by reducing gatherings.
