Culture Ministry discusses preventative measures for resumed activities

Date for reopening of cultural activities yet to be announced

Minister of Culture Ines Abdel-Dayem met with Cairo Opera House Chairperson, Magdy Saber, and several representatives from the ministry’s cultural sectors, to discuss preventative measures for when cultural activities resume.

During the meeting, the minister and the attendees discussed ways of investing and improving the equipment needed to hold open-air cultural events in the Cairo Opera grounds.

The meeting also tackled the required safety measures once the government’s co-existence plan comes into effect, to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a statement, the ministry announced that work has begun on new cultural productions aimed at spreading awareness on the coronavirus. They will also highlight the struggles of the country’s army, police force and medical teams in battling the pandemic.

The discussion was attended by Saber, in addition to the opera’s artistic and administrative team, head of Cultural Production Sector Khaled Galal, and head of Theatre Production House Ismail Mokhtar, among others.

Although the ministry has yet to provide information on a potential date for a possible cultural reopening, the meeting’s main target was to prepare for a possible return to cultural activities in the near future.

All cultural activities have been suspended across Egypt since 9 March, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
