Parliament to discuss, vote on new laws on Sunday

Abdel Aal sends letter to NEA President requesting commission’s opinions on election law

Parliament will discuss and vote on several draft laws on Sunday, including one on the formation and election of the Senate, and draft amendments to the House of Representatives law.

The Senate draft law was submitted by MP Abdel-Hadi El-Kasaby, head of the social solidarity committee in Parliament. It also amends some provisions of the Law Regulating the Exercise of Political Rights, and the Parliament Law.

Parliament will continue to convene for a period of 3 days, to conclude discussion of other draft laws and agreements.

Parliamentary sources told the Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper that the first elections for the newly established Senate, an upper house of parliament created under 2019 constitutional amendments, will take place in August. They said that elections for the lower house, the House of Representatives, will be held in November, as previously scheduled.

On Saturday, Akmal Kortam, head for the parliamentary group of the Conservative Party, stressed that his party rejects the Senate draft law submitted by the Support Egypt parliamentary coalition.

The Conservative Party previously announced its rejection in a joint statement along with other political parties. Emphasising the negative repercussions of the draft law, the party outlined that it was prepared without consultations with other parties.

On Friday, Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal sent a letter to Lasheen Ibrahim, President of the National Elections Authority (NEA), requesting the authority’s opinion on the reports prepared by the parliament’s legislative committee on recent draft laws, including the Senate formation.

During this week’s sessions, Parliament will also discuss the general report of the planning and budget committee on the medium-term sustainable development plan for fiscal years (FY) 2018/19 to 2021/22.  It will also discuss the state budget project, public economic body budgets, and the draft budget for the National Military Production Authority for FY 2020/21.
