Uber launches Connect in Egypt for goods transportation

Egypt is first country to roll out the product in MENA region

Uber has announced the launch of its Connect service in Egypt, providing delivery solutions that enable users to send packages and request deliveries through the company’s app.

The service falls under Uber’s global pledge to help people continue to move the items they need to during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Egypt is the first country to roll out the product in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, to support locals as the country coexists with the virus.

Uber Connect will initially launch with two types of services, the first of which allows users to send packages to and from friends and family. The second service provides a stop and shop service, where drivers can pick up deliveries from nearby shops on behalf of users. Facilitating day-to-day activities through the app, Uber Connect aims to keep users connected, while encouraging social distancing and other precautionary measures.

The company has been proactively looking for ways to create more demand for current drivers, aiming to increase the earnings of those who have been impacted by the pandemic lockdown.

As an on-demand service, deliveries facilitated via Uber Connect are carried out on the same day by Uber Scooter drivers. Scooter drivers who choose to opt-in will now be able to receive delivery requests, as well as the usual rider commute requests.

This is a proud moment for us as we add a new service to our app in Egypt, and is another first in the MENA region,” said Ahmed Khalil, General Manager of Uber in Egypt. “Uber Connect has been designed to ease senders’ daily errands, while empowering drivers with new earning opportunities.”

Khalil added that, by launching Uber Connect, the company is taking a step forward to accelerate its efforts to keep the community safe.

“Our role as a technology company won’t stop here, as we will continue to evolve to effectively and sustainably define the new normal during this unprecedented time,” Khalil added.
