Siemens, ETHYDCO undertake 10-year contract for preventive maintenance

German giant to provide maintenance of three gas turbines at ETHYDCO industrial complex

Siemens Energy has signed a 10-year contract with the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO), to provide preventive maintenance services at the latter’s industrial complex in Alexandria.

Siemens Energy will provide maintenance of three SGT-800 industrial gas turbines that have been in operation at the ETHYDCO industrial complex since 2017.

The agreement also includes Siemens Energy’s industrial applications team providing a comprehensive package of shutdown services, spare parts, and gas turbine repair, which are a major component of ETHYDCO’s production processes.

The station currently has an electricity production capacity of 150 MW, which is used to power the Petrochemical Industrial Complex in Alexandria, the largest of its kind in Africa. The cooperation will allow technical teams to carry out all procedures and preventive checks on turbines, while reducing operational stoppage times to a minimum.

Ayman El Shafei, General Manager of Maintenance at ETHYDCO, said that, as one of Egyptian market’s most prominent companies operating in the petrochemical and refining industry, ETHYDCO is focused on raising efficiency and safety at its industrial complex.

“At the same time, we strive to reduce unplanned operational downtime and increase flow, which is essential to achieving our productivity goals,” he said, “The preventive maintenance solutions provided by Siemens Energy will improve the reliability and operational availability of gas turbines.”

El Shafei noted that this will occur by extending the operating intervals between consecutive maintenance operations, and as a result reducing overall operating costs. Additionally, preventive maintenance will help bring additional environmental benefits by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, he added.

Ashraf Hamas, Director of the Energy and Digitization Services Unit at Siemens Energy in Egypt, said the agreement with ETHYDCO is evidence of the growing relationships in the local market. It also confirms the advantages provided by Siemens Energy’s services and offerings in improving production process levels and operational availability. The agreement will additionally provide environmental benefits in the form of reduced carbon emissions.
