Prime Minister approves salary rise for Egyptian teachers

Minister of Finance says teachers allowance will also increase by 50%

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly approved, on Wednesday, a new financial benefits package of EGP 6.1bn to 2.1 million teachers across the country.

Madbouly approved a draft law that aims to improve the conditions of teachers in public and Azhar education schools.

He added that further raises are expected to medical workers and other workers in important sectors and industries. The suggested monthly increase for teachers will start from EGP 325 for junior teachers to EGP 475 for senior teachers, in addition to other school administration incentives.

The raise will affect teachers in public schools and Al Azhar-affiliated education institutions, and will be put into effect upon President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s directives, Madbouly added.

Moreover, Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait said that the draft law includes a 50% increase on the value of the teacher allowance, ranging from EGP 75 to EGP 180 according to the teacher’s job level. A total of 1.4 million teachers will benefit from this rise, at an annual cost of EGP 1.8bn.

A total of 700,000 employees also will benefit from the rise, at a monthly average ranging from EGP 50 to EGP 155, at an annual cost of EGP 2.3bn.
