Egypt sees 6.6% surge in crude steel production during 9M of 2020

The report said that Egyptian production of crude steel amounted to 601,000 tonnes in September 2020, compared to 496,000 tonnes in September 2019, reflecting an increase of 21.2%.


There has been a 6.6% increase in Egypt’s production of crude steel during the first nine months of 2020, with manufacture rising to 6m tonnes during this time period. This compared to the 5.5m tonnes produced during the same period last year, according to a World Steel Association (worldsteel) report.

The report said that Egyptian production of crude steel amounted to 601,000 tonnes in September 2020, compared to 496,000 tonnes in September 2019, reflecting an increase of 21.2%.

According to production reports submitted to worldsteel by 64 countries, global crude steel production decreased to 1.3bn tonnes during the first nine months of this year. The figure reflected a 3.2% decrease compared to the 1.4bn tonnes reported during the same period last year.

China achieved a 4.5% increase in steel production during the first nine months of the year, with a total of 781.5m tonnes, compared to 748.1m tonnes in the same period last year.

Additionally, Asian Group’s crude steel production during the first nine months of the year increased by 0.2% to 1bn tonnes, compared to 999.5m tonnes during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the Middle East Group’s production decreased 1.9% to 29.2m tonnes in the first nine months of the current year, compared to 29.8m tonnes in the same period last year.

The African Group’s production decreased by 16.1%, to record 9m tonnes in the first nine months of 2020, compared to 10.8m tonnes in the same period last year. North American countries produced 27.2m tonnes, compared to 31.6m tonnes, a decrease of 14%.

The report noted that the production of EU countries decreased by 18% to reach 99.3m tonnes, compared to 121m tonnes in the same period of the previous year.

Turkey’s steel production increased 2% to 26 million tonnes during the first nine months of the year, compared to 25.2m tonnes during the same period last year. 

Russia’s steel production decreased by 1.4% to 53.2m tonnes in the first nine months of 2020, compared to 54m tonnes in the same period of 2019.
