EGP 481bn increase in financial position of banks in Egypt during Q3 2020

CBE indicated that the capital of the 10 largest banks operating in the Egyptian market reached about EGP 120.822bn in September 2020


The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) on Monday revealed that the total financial position of banks operating in the local market, other than itself, reached about EGP 6.889trn in September 2020, up from about EGP 6.408trn in June 2020, an increase of about EGP 481bn.

In its quarterly report on the financial soundness of banks, CBE explained that cash balances at lenders increased to EGP 55.209bn in September 2020, while the interbank deposit reached EGP 881.430bn in Egypt and about EGP 294.325bn abroad.

It added that loan and discount balances for clients recorded about EGP 2.382trn, while the securities and investments in treasury bills recorded EGP 2.784trn.

At the level of liabilities, CBE said that the total capital of banks in Egypt recorded EGP 174.672bn in September 2020, with EGP 313.086bn reserves. The volume of allocations amounted to about EGP 152.999bn.

The liabilities of banks towards each other in Egypt recorded about EGP 229.627bn, while their liabilities to banks abroad recorded EGP 121.674bn, and total deposits amounted to about EGP 5.035trn.

CBE revealed that the total financial position of the top 10 lenders operating in the local market reached EGP 5.336trn in September 2020.

While CBE did not disclose the names of these banks, it is known that they include National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, CIB, Banque du Caire, QNB Alahli, Arab African International Bank, HSBC, Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt, Alexbank, and Credit Agricole.

CBE indicated that the capital of the 10 largest banks operating in the Egyptian market reached about EGP 120.822bn in September 2020, while their reserves amounted to EGP 233.917bn, with EGP 103.491bn allocations.

The volume of long-term bonds and loans in the top 10 banks amounted to EGP 184.502bn, while their total deposits amounted to EGP 3.913trn.

As for the financial position of the top five lenders operating in the local market, CBE revealed that it reached EGP 4.665trn in September 2020.

CBE noted that the capital of the five largest banks in Egypt reached about EGP 98.432bn in September 2020, while their reserves reached EGP 196.809bn, and allocations recorded EGP 84.465bn.

The volume of long-term bonds and loans in the five lenders amounted to EGP 175.599bn, while their total deposits amounted to about EGP 3.436trn.
