Shoukry stresses Egypt’s commitment to protect, promote human rights

Assistant minister of foreign affairs for human rights Ahmed Ihab Gamal El-Din said that committee is preparing first draft of national human rights strategy

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry met, on Tuesday, with the members of the technical secretariat of the Supreme Standing Committee for Human Rights (SSCHR) , where he stressed Egypt’s commitment to protect and promote human rights.

During the meeting, Shoukry said that the establishment and work of the committee reflected a practical translation of the strong political will of the Egyptian state, at the highest level, to protect and promote respect for human rights.

He stressed the importance of the role entrusted to the technical secretariat of the committee to implement the missions assigned to it in this framework.

Moreover, the minister stressed that rights are at the core of the state’s development strategy, noting that the efforts made by the national agencies in this regard reflect a national self-conviction.

The comprehensive development process led by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is steadily moving forward according to an integrated vision that takes into account human rights in its broad and comprehensive sense and addresses the needs and aspirations of the Egyptian citizen first of all,” Shoukry said.

Furthermore, Ahmed Ihab Gamal El-Din, the assistant minister of foreign affairs for human rights and the Secretary-General of the Committee, briefed Shoukry and the attendees on the achievements of the secretariat during the first year of its work.

The committee is preparing for the first draft of a national strategy for human rights, according to Gamal El-Din.

Earlier, Professor and member of SSCHR advisory board Niveen Mossad told Daily News Egypt that the strategy aims to reflect the real conditions of human rights in Egypt, and showcase the efforts being undertaken on those issues.

The country has achieved a lot in the economic, health, social, and women rights, however, these achievements were not highlighted. The strategy offers a chance to include the insights of everyone who wants to participate to advance these rights.
