Egyptian Trade Minister, Sudanese ministers discuss boosting bilateral trade

Talks covered developments in establishing Egyptian industrial zone in Sudan, re-operating Egyptian Commercial Center in Khartoum

Egypt’s Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has met with Sudanese ministers in Khartoum to discuss boosting trade between the two countries.

During the meeting, Gamea affirmed Egypt’s full economic support for Sudan during its transitional period.

The minister also said that Egypt’s business community welcomes the setting up of partnerships with their Sudanese counterpart. This would come in accordance with industrial and infrastructure projects that Sudan is targeting during the coming period.

She said that the talks with the ministers dealt with developments in establishing an Egyptian industrial zone in Sudan. A feasibility study for the region has been completed, and coordination is underway with the Sudanese side to bring this matter into effect during the coming near period.

The minister further called on the Sudanese side to hold Joint Trade Committee meetings in Cairo, to discuss all technical issues related to the flow of trade between the two countries.

The two sides discussed ways for the Sudanese side to renew the necessary licences for an Egyptian commercial centre. The project will contribute to providing the Sudanese market’s needs at lower prices than importing those products from other markets that are higher in cost and time.

Gamea said that she discussed, with Sudan’s Federal Minister of State for Infrastructure and Transport Hashim Ibnauf, the possibilities for the participation of Egypt’s private sector companies in developing a triangle around the Sudanese capital. The discussions took place in regard to developing joint relations between Egypt and Sudan in infrastructure and transportation.

The project covers the Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri regions, and includes re-paving roads, the construction of several bridges, and the renewal of sewage networks.

Gamea added that Egypt can provide Sudan’s required needs for the implementation of these projects. This will be reflected in the increase of Egyptian exports to the Sudanese market, in addition to opening areas in which Egyptian companies can implement other construction projects in Sudan.
