Environment Minister emphasises boosting public awareness on dangers facing nature

Egypt-China action platform has attracted over 171 participants to stimulate actions on conserving biodiversity

Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad has stressed the importance of increasing efforts to raise public awareness on the dangers facing nature.

These efforts are to be put in place to deal with the negative effects of these dangers on the planet, the global economy, and life on earth.

Fouad made her remarks during her participation at a satellite event held on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) session on Saturday.

During her speech, the Minister called on all individuals and entities, including youth, women, businessmen, civil society organisations, academics, financial sectors and local communities, to participate in the preservation of natural and biological diversity.

She also called on those individuals and entities to record their commitment and activities in support of nature on the electronic platform launched by Egypt and China. The platform was launched in 2018, in coordination with the General Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD).

The platform, called the “Sharm El-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People”, has attracted more than 171 participants since its launch.

Moreover, Fouad highlighted the online platform’s importance in terms of stimulating actions and displaying the commitments and tangible contributions to conservation. It will also highlight efforts made relating to the sustainable use of biological diversity from stakeholders in all development sectors, to support countries to implement the goals of the UNCBD.

“It is not possible to protect biological diversity and natural resources in isolation from confronting climate change and desertification,” she said.

Fouad highlighted the Egyptian initiative to integrate the three Rio conventions, relating to biodiversity, climate change, and desertification.
