Egypt’s agricultural exports to US rise 22% to $220m in 2020

US agricultural exports to Egypt also increased 23% to $2bn last year

Despite the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Egyptian agricultural exports to the US increased by 22% during 2020, reaching a record high of $220m, according to US Ambassador to Egypt Jonathan Cohen.

The ambassador’s remarks came during his speech at the virtual webinar hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham) entitled “US-Egypt-Partnership, and the outlook for 2021”.

He said that US agricultural exports to Egypt increased by a remarkable 23% in 2020, to nearly $2bn, led by soybeans, grains, dairy, and tree nuts.

“Egypt presents us with growing demand and attractive opportunities in agriculture,” the Ambassador said, “US companies are already active in food and beverages, feedstock, and much more.”

He also said that agribusiness associations in the US are working closely with local firms to share best practices,” the Ambassador explained.

Cohen further said that there are opportunities to bring US technology and know-how to increase yields and make farms more efficient, and to maximise use of water resources.

This exchange of expertise would also work towards improving supply and production chains, and to expand the quality and availability of food and beverages that Egypt’s growing population demands.
