Egypt, South Korea discuss ways to expand social welfare cooperation

Both sides aim to sign joint Social Security Agreement soon to promote Korean investments in Egypt

Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Kabbaj met with South Korea’s Ambassador to Egypt Hong Jin-wook, on Monday, to discuss ways to expand cooperation in the social welfare sector.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed support policies to promote Egypt’s handicraft industry and expedite the signing of a joint Korea-Egypt Social Security agreement.

Ambassador Hong said that the Korean Government has decided to lend its support to the Tasameem Design Hub with $200,000 worth of equipment which was directly requested by Minister El-Kabbaj in 2019.

He also mentioned that this project aims to support employment in Egypt and startups set-up by the country’s youth and women, and contribute to the Egyptian Government’s policy to build up the handicraft industry.

The Ambassador also noted the efforts made to improve the social welfare of Egyptians under President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s ‘Decent Life’ Initiative. He expressed his hope that cooperation with the Ministry of Social Solidarity will expand based on Korea’s experience in high-quality health insurance services and pension systems.

In response, El-Kabbaj expressed her intention to continue consultation with Korea in the social welfare sector, which is President Al-Sisi’s biggest concern.

Both the Minister and the Ambassador shared the view that Egypt is one of the most attractive partners for Korean companies.
