Arab League, Iraq discuss developments in country, region

Pan-Arab bloc also lends support to Iraqi anti-terrorism efforts

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, has met with Iraqi President Barham Salih to discuss developments in the political and security situation in Iraq and the region.

The Arab League chief arrived for an official visit to Iraq on Saturday. During the meeting, the two sides also discussed the challenges of stabilising these areas, as well as those associated with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Salih asserted that these developments require joint solidarity, as well as support for the paths of security, stability, economic cooperation, and development opportunities.

The President said that his country’s efforts are focused on supporting dialogue to settle problems and reduce tensions in the region.

Iraq adopts joint Arab cooperation in establishing security and peace in the region as an integral part of the security and stability of Iraq, Salih said. He stressed the importance of the role of the Arab League in this regard by coordinating positions among the member states.

Salih pointed out that the policy of openness pursued by Iraq stems from his awareness of the importance of creating joint dialogues to strengthen the foundations of stability. He added that Iraq’s stability and sovereignty is an indispensable element for the security of the whole region, and the interests of its people.

For his part, Aboul Gheit gave an explanation on the Arab League’s efforts to enhance regional cooperation and establish security and stability.

He stressed his organisation’s support for the Iraqi government’s efforts in combating terrorism, enhancing the country’s security and stability, and protecting its sovereignty and the security of its citizens.

During his visit, Aboul Gheit met with Iraq’s Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. During a joint press conference, he affirmed that his visit to Baghdad was a message of support for the Iraqi government and the country’s people.

Aboul Gheit pledged to fulfil any needs that Iraq requires from the Arab League. He said that the organisation listened to Minister Hussein’s ideas regarding Iraq’s relations with its neighbours, along the lines of Arab countries and major world powers.

He added that Iraq is one of the Arab League’s founding countries, resulting in a close relationship with and support for the organisation.

Aboul Gheit expressed his hope that this visit would contribute to strengthening relations of cooperation between the Arab League and Iraq.

He indicated that Iraq is an active member in its support of the Arab League, particularly as the organisation is going through a period of difficulties, whether due to the conditions of its member countries, or to difficulties related to financing its activities.

He also expressed his confidence in the Iraqi administration and its ability to interact with all powers in a way that always secures the interests of Iraq.
