Egypt’s Nile revenue committee discusses water resources management during peak demand

Water Minister stresses necessity to address encroachments on Nile River, affiliated canals

The Permanent Committee for Regulating the River Nile Revenue met, on Thursday, to follow up on the situation of the Nile River revenue for the current water year.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Atty, also addressed the procedures to achieve optimal management of water resources during the period of maximum needs.

During the meeting, Abdel Atty directed the ministry’s bodies to raise the level of readiness to deal with the coming peak period to ensure meeting water needs for all beneficiaries.

He also stressed the need to continue to address all forms of encroachment on the Nile River and affiliated canals in coordination with various state agencies, and to take legal measures to preserve the waterways from encroachment and pollution.

Moreover, Abdel Atty also directed the necessity of regular and continuous supervision to confront the violations related to rice cultivation, and the immediate application of fines for wasting water.

Rice is one of the most water consuming crops, and the outlawed cultivation of rice has a negative impact on the ability of water networks to meet other needs during the peak period in the summer, according to the ministry.
