Egypt explores ways to support Libyan transitional phase

Both sides discuss providing resources, programmes for Libya, according to Government of National Unity’s requirements

Egypt’s permanent representative to the United Nations )UN) Mohamed Idris met with his Libyan counterpart Taher Al-Sunni to discuss supporting Libya in its transitional phase.

This would also see support given to promote lasting peace and stability in the country and the region.

The discussions took place through the UN Peace-Building Commission, chaired by Egypt, which is also representing Africa.

The meeting between the two sides dealt with ways to provide the necessary resources and programmes for Libya, according to the requirements of the Government of National Unity (GNU). These would be provided through UN organisations and bodies specialised in the field of peacebuilding.

The two sides touched on the most important files of mutual interest, ways to support and enhance the stability and national security of the two countries.

Idris and Al-Sunni reviewed the priorities and needs required by the transitional phase in Libya to find peaceful solutions away from conflict and fighting.

They also discussed how to work towards supporting the outcomes of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF). It includes the UN Security Council decisions that will lead to presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of 2021 in Libya.
