Ever Given container ship that blocked Suez Canal leaves after settlement

Egypt's Ismailia Economic Court agreed to lift its impound order against Ever Given container ship on Tuesday

Egypt announced, on Wednesday, that an undisclosed settlement has been reached with the Evergreen marine corporation regarding its massive container ship, the Even Given.

The ship, one of the largest container ships in the world, ran aground in the Suez Canal on 23 March, disrupting international maritime traffic for nearly a week, leading to great economic losses.

The Egyptian authorities succeeded in refloating the ship on 29 March using a fleet of tugboats and diggers.

Osama Rabie, Chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), witnessed the signing ceremony, during a press conference on Wednesday, of the deal between the SCA and the owner of the vessel.

After the deal was signed, the ship resumed its journey down the Suez Canal, heading towards Europe’s largest seaport of Rotterdam.

Notably on Tuesday, the Ismailia Economic Court agreed to lift its impound order against the giant Ever Given ship, allowing it to leave the canal on Wednesday as per the request of the SCA so it can continue its voyage to Rotterdam.
