Italy’s FM in Tripoli to address stability, institutional transition

The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Italy looks forward to the commitment of all Libyan parties with a view to achieving tangible progress towards holding elections on time, implementing a ceasefire and adopting a budget.

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio arrived in the Libyan capital Tripoli, on Monday, to continue dialogue with the main Libyan parties on the process of stability and institutional transition.

The Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Italy looks forward to the commitment of all Libyan parties with a view to achieving tangible progress towards holding elections on time, implementing a ceasefire and adopting a budget.

Last week, the Italian capital, Rome, hosted Libyan consultations to discuss the preparation for general elections,

This meeting was considered as the “last chance” to prepare for the election due to take place after five months.

These consultations come after the failure of the political dialogue forum that met weeks ago in the Swiss city of Geneva to reach clear consensus and understandings on a constitutional and legal basis for holding the next elections in the country on schedule.

The elections are an essential part of international efforts to establish security and stability in Libya, which has been witnessing division and chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
