Ain Shams University wins UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy 2021

University praised for organising online literacy classes for rural areas nationwide


The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that Egypt’s Ain Shams University has won the UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy 2021, for organising online literacy classes for rural areas all over Egypt.

The international jury hailed the Egyptian programme for organizing online literacy classes for rural areas in Egypt. The programme aimed at preparing university students to work as literacy teachers in communities, as well as using distance learning techniques to help them promote their digital, communication skills.

This award was established in 2005, with the support of China, and is concerned with programs that encourage functional literacy, leveraging technological environments, in support of adults in rural areas and out-of-school Youth, especially girls and women.

This award is granted to governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world in recognition of their outstanding efforts in the field of illiteracy eradication.

Each of the three UNESCO Confucius winners receives every year a medal, a diploma, and $30.000 prize.

Ain Shams University is also scheduled to participate in the activities of the symposium that will be held virtually due the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on 9 September, in conjunction with the celebration of the International Literacy Day.
